Wasn't the Mustang II based off the Pinto?

yep
they may have sold well but I never really see them around anymore. I found 2 in a JY near me, one was a king cobra II

I kind of want one, and was also wondering that, did rust dwindle the II's numbers quicker than any car in history?I

So basically Ford said "The Pinto fucking sucks. Lets just put a new body on it, call it a Mustang II, and people will buy it."? Is that what I'm understanding?

By 73 the mustang got huge, and this is right around the time that cars were starting to downsize, so ford was seeing a decrease in sales. They came out with the 74 mustang II just before the jimmy carter gas crisis hit, and sales took off. The car made sense for its time, but a performance machine it was not.

I think rust dwindled like every malaise era car, when was the last time you saw a chevy vega in the wild?

So the Mustang II was the economy Mustang. For those who wanted a Mustang but didn't want to pay for gas to much. I get it! Thanks!

they still offered a high output 302 v8 for those who craved performance even in those gas pinching times.... I think it made like 140hp at most

As rare as rocking horse crap now. Real head turner just because it's so unusual to see one...which should not be confused with desirable by the way...

"Jimmy Carter gas crisis"? Forgive me for weak knowledge of US history since I am not a native of said country, but AFAIK Carter became Prez in 1976 and the crisis was in late 1973, due to the restrictions imposed by the OPEC landlords to all allies of Israel. More like the "Anti-Semite Gas Crisis".

I don't think it blew up into the, hours long gas lines, can only fill up on certain days depending on what the first letter of your license plate is, type of ordeal until later years.

Still, late 1973 isn't "just before" 1976.
